Henry L.  Walter
Henry Walter, 85, of Elk Horn, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, September 6, 2017, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Henry LeRoy, son of Fred and Pauline (Harmsen) Walter, was born on June 4, 1932, in Cass County, Iowa. He attended Brighton #6 school, and was later drafted in the United States Army at the age of 20. During his time in the service he spent 1 ½ years in France, and after his honorable discharge he began farming with his father and brother.

On February 16, 1957, he was united in marriage to Mardell Andersen at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church. They farmed in Cass County until 1964, when they moved to a farm they purchased from his father-in-law in Shelby County where they resided until they made their home in Elk Horn in 1984.

Over the years Henry was a member of the Elk’s Club and Elk Horn American Legion Post #322, bowled for 41 years, and served on the church council and cemetery board for 18 years. He also was one of many who helped erect the Danish Windmill and Elk Horn swimming pool. Henry looked forward to daily visits to the coffee shop, he also loved tractor rides and card parties with friends. Most of all he treasured spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mardell of Elk Horn; daughters, Joan (Brian) Mewhirter of Atlantic and Cheryl (Troy) Petersen of Elk Horn; 6 grandchildren, Travis (Stef) Mewhirter of Atlantic, Nicole (Travis) Olson of Ankeny, Kyle (Alicia) Petersen of Exira, Chase (Megan) Mewhirter of Atlantic, Dustin Petersen of Marne, and Paige (Jose) Perez of Atlantic; 12 great-grandchildren, Lane, Claire, Hailie, Brooklynn, Tristan, Evelyn, Brody, Kohen, Pyper, Colton, Carsyn, and Bryleigh; sisters, Annabelle (Gail) Lange of Atlantic, Carolyn (Jack) Johnson of Atlantic and Emy (Jack) Barringer of Ames; and brother-in-law, Vernon Andersen of Winchester, CA, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Janelle Walter; twin grandsons, Brett and Brandon Mewhirter; and brothers, Paul and Don Walter.

Open visitation will be Friday, September 8th from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., followed by visitation with the family from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 9, 2017, at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church, with Reverend Keith Menter officiating. Burial, with military honors by the Elk Horn American Legion Post #322, will be held in the Elk Horn Lutheran Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the family for designation at a later date.
