Obituary for Lela Berniece Petersen (Boggs)

Lela Petersen, 78, of Atlantic, passed away Saturday, March 5, 2016, at Allen Place in Atlantic, where she had resided since October.

Lela was born August 7, 1937, in Lewis, Iowa, the daughter of Merritt and Estella (Flathers) Boggs. She grew up in Atlantic and Marne and graduated from Atlantic High School in 1955. She married Everett Petersen, February 15, 1958, and had two children, Norman "Buke" and Debra "Babe".

Lela worked at the Atlantic Locker most of her life. She also worked at Delongs, Hy-Vee Meat Department and Henningsen's Locker. Spending time and doing things with her grandchildren may very well have been her greatest love. Lela enjoyed cooking and dancing, but really enjoyed pulling the "one armed bandit" at the casinos. She may not have won much, but had fun with her friends.

Surviving Lela are her children, Norman "Buke" (Lori) Petersen of Marne and Debra "Babe" (Jess) Rush of Elliott; her grandchildren, Brad (Mindy) Rush of Griswold, Haley (Chad) Begley of Ankeny, Crystal (Mark) Naser of Griswold, Brandon (Stacey) Petersen of Norwalk, Nick Rush of Griswold and Jeremy (fiancé, Felesha) Petersen of Marne; five great-grandchildren, Alex, Madison, Macy, Rylie, Briar and Mason; sisters, Janice Hines of Des Moines, Mary Jane McDermott of Atlantic, Muriel Riley of Lewis and Sandy Roberts of Missouri; brother, Leslie (Karen) Boggs of Atlantic; sisters-in-law, Janis Boggs of Atlantic and Edna Boggs of Cedar Rapids; brother-in-law, Mervin (Carol) Petersen of Earlham; and many nieces, nephews, cousins & friends.

She was preceded in death by her children's father, Everett Petersen; her parents; her brothers, Orville and Lawrence; sisters, Betty Ann Nichols, Marilyn Luke and Kathy Sue, in infancy; brothers-in-law, Frank Hines, Ron Riley, Marvin Nichols, Morris Luke and Darrell Petersen; sisters-in-law, Mona (Bill) Watson and Betty Clements.
