Obituary for Martha Jane Lehmkuhl (Lindeman)
Martha Jane (Lindeman) Lehmkuhl, 99, of Villisca, Iowa, went home to be with her Lord on May 17, 2021.
Martha Jane was born on April 15, 1922, in rural Lyman, Iowa, the daughter of Calvin George and Alma Sophia (Wohlenhaus) Lindeman. Music was a big part of her and her siblings’ childhood; so much so there was a Lindeman - Brown Orchestra. Martha Jane and her sisters, Lois, Betty and Pauline went alongside Calvin when he was asked to share the word of the Lord at a funeral and shared their musical talents. Martha Jane occasionally played the ukulele and was a strict critic of vocal harmony. She was active in music in high school and graduated from Atlantic High School in the Class of 1940, with Normal Training. Following high school, she taught country school for eight years.
On May 10, 1948, she married Grover R. Lehmkuhl in the Cameo Room at the Whitney Manor in Atlantic. On their 50th Anniversary they were able to gather with family and friends in the same room and celebrate. Following their marriage, they moved to Le Mars, Iowa, and later moved to Villisca in 1967. While she was raising Laurel and Amy, Martha Jane remained active in teaching Sunday School and as a Brownie, Girl Scout, and 4-H leader. After the girls were grown, she decided her work as a teacher wasn’t complete; returning to the Villisca school system as a para-educator and substitute, retiring at the age of 88. The relationships she created with her students were long-lasting and many of them shared with her the impact she made on them was life changing. Martha Jane was not only their teacher but also attended many activities they were involved with. She and Grover traveled many miles to be their cheerleaders.
Martha Jane and Grover enjoyed traveling and had visited all 48 continental United States. They looked forward to eating out, especially breakfast and trying new restaurants; and maybe more than once traveled to eastern Iowa for what they said were the best onion rings. She loved to read, do crosswords and always solved the daily word jumble. Her sewing skills were out of this world, even referred to as legendary. Martha Jane sewed and altered countless pieces of clothing for friends in addition to the school band, cheerleading, and sports uniforms. She proved to many, possibly after she was denied Facebook, that texting wasn’t just for the younger generations, she was a “Mad Texter.”
Her family brought her great joy, from family get togethers, holidays and attending every activity she could of her grandchildren. Martha Jane started her journey with the Lord at Lyman Gospel Hall and returned in her later years to worship there once again. She always carried a strong faith and was a mighty prayer warrior.
Martha Jane is survived by her daughters, Laurel (Mark) Goldapp of Red Oak, IA, and Amy (Jeff) Vanderhoof of Villisca, IA; grandchildren, Matthew (Jodi) Goldapp of Council Bluffs, IA, Daniel Vanderhoof of Lincoln, NE, Lisa (Jeffrey) Sparks of Villisca, IA, Jill Vanderhoof of Avoca, IA and Scott Vanderhoof of Villisca, IA; great-grandchildren, Grace and Josie Goldapp, Emma and Mia Vodicka, and Jaxton Sparks; brother, C. G. “June” (Helen) Lindeman of Atlantic, IA, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Grover Lehmkuhl; siblings, Pauline (Travis and Murry) Martens-Schuler, Lois (Harold) Wagner, Grace (Verlain) Rathkamp, Lloyd “Bud” (Doris Jane) Lindeman, and Betty (B.J.) Riley; sisters-in-law, Carol Lindeman, Iola (Kenneth) Muller, and Lenora (Junior) Wohlenhaus; brother-in-law in infancy; brother-in-law, Harry (Dorothy) Lehmkuhl; father and mother-in-law, Alvin and Louise (Wohlenhaus) Lehmkuhl.
Open visitation will be held until service time on Thursday, May 20th at Roland Funeral Home, starting at 9:00 a.m. No visitation with the family present will be held.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. Burial will be in the Weirich Cemetery, southeast of Lyman, Iowa. The service will be livestreamed and more details will be available closer to the time of the service at www.rolandfuneralservice.com. Immediately following the service, please join the family for pie and ice cream in honor of Martha Jane.

“When We All Get to Heaven” - A Lindeman Family Tradition
