Obituary for Karen Mehlmann
Karen A. Mehlmann, 73, of Papillion, Nebraska, died Wednesday, March 31, 2021, at Hillcrest Country Estate Cottages Skilled Nursing Home in Papillion.
Karen Ann was born on February 21, 1948, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence Carl and Peggy (O’Dell) Hartman. She grew up on a farm west of Mineola, Iowa, and loved playing with her dog, Collie. The family later moved to Council Bluffs and Karen attended Woodrow Wilson Junior High and graduated from Thomas Jefferson in the Class of 1966.
Following graduation, she worked at Armour Meat Packing and later KPMG Accounting Firm. Karen worked there for over 30 years, retiring in 2001.
On November 12, 1971, she was united in marriage to Roger Lee Mehlmann at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Council Bluffs.
Karen and Roger enjoyed traveling which included cruises, Alaska and Hawaii being the most memorable, and bus tours, the Pacific Northwest and New York being their favorites. They looked forward to the occasional trip to the casino where she mainly played the penny slots but if you asked her what she would play she would say, “anything that is paying.”
She had various hobbies which included attending craft fairs, gardening, crocheting, watching the Hallmark channel, doing her Penny Puzzler magazines and reading. Karen loved the Christmas season and decorating wasn’t complete until her Christmas Village was in her front window.
Karen is survived by her husband of 50 years, Roger of Papillion, NE; brothers, Kevin Hartman and Kris (Gabriele) Hartman, all of Council Bluffs, IA; nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, sister-in-law, Lori Hartman, and beloved rescue dogs, Rollo and Kia.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 6, 2021, at the Atlantic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Karen’s name to Parkinson’s Nebraska or the Nebraska Humane Society.
