Obituary for Rosalie "Rosie" Masteller (Schaaf)

Rosalie “Rosie” E. Masteller, 87, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away the 26th day of April, 2020, at Heritage House in Atlantic.

Rosie was born in Atlantic, Iowa, on December 17, 1932, to Herman and Zeta Schaaf of Cumberland. She graduated from Atlantic High School in 1951, as the class salutatorian. Rosie then attended The Commercial Extension School of Commerce in Omaha where she graduated in 1952, with highest honors.

On September 28, 1952, she married Curtis Campbell Masteller of Atlantic. She and Curt lived briefly in California while he served in the United States Air Force before moving back to Atlantic to raise their five boys on a farm southeast of town.

Loving, friendly and smart can only begin to describe Rosie. She and Curt enjoyed playing cards with the same group of friends for over 60 years. In her younger years, she enjoyed playing volleyball and tennis. Later, she was engaged with her boys’ various activities including, school and 4-H events; her car always being loaded with bikes, baseball gear, tennis rackets, golf clubs... Rosie liked cheering for her favorite sports teams, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Iowa State Cyclones. Her quiet time was filled with reading, word/trivia games, and enjoying the serenity of the farm.

Rosie worked for the Cambridge Law Firm for many years as a legal secretary specializing in farm and estate taxes before retiring in 2008. She was also a long-standing member of the First United Presbyterian Church.

Rosie is survived by her sons, Mark of Ames, Brian of Wiota, Bruce (Coni) of Lindsay, NE, Steve (Andrea) of Clive and Jeff (Kelli) of Burleson, TX; beloved grandchildren: Michael (Tara), Justin, Joshua (Jamie), Mikaela (Clayton), Alyssa, Carter, Elly, Kara, Marco, Carson (Cody), Campbell and Camryn; great-grandchildren, Presley, Locklyn, Ledger, and Veda; and sister-in-law, Barbara Wollenhaupt

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Curtis; parents-in-law, Curtis W. and Elsie (Campbell) Masteller; brothers, Merlin (Vera), Galen, and Loren Schaaf; brother-in-law, Gerald Wollenhaupt; brother and sisters-in-law, Calvin and Mary Ellen Knop.

Her sons will greet relatives and friends from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 29th, at Roland Funeral Home. As per CDC guidelines, social distancing will be observed and 10 people will be permitted in the building at a time.

A private family graveside service will take place at the Atlantic Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the family for designation at a later date.
