The son of John Harles, Sr. and Kathleen Schrader Yokimishyn, he was born February 8, 1944, in Baltimore, Maryland. He graduated from high school in Boonesboro, MD in 1962. They then moved to Atlantic, Iowa where he was employed by the Atlantic Community Schools as a custodian for 29 years, until retiring in 2006.

John enjoyed golfing and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. His deep passion was baseball and he coached Little League for 6 years. He also loved music! He attended the Atlantic Evangelical Free Church for 31 years. Spending time with his grandchildren was one of his greatest joys!
