Obituary for Gary Scherdin
Gary Scherdin, 78, of Atlantic, Iowa, died Thursday, June 13, 2019, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa.
The son of Raymond Ellsworth and Marjorie Ann (Quick) Scherdin, he was born August 2, 1940, in Omaha, Nebraska. He attended the Atlantic Community Schools in Atlantic, Iowa. Gary enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1957, and was stationed at Clinton Sherman Air Force Base in Burns Flat, OK. He was honorably discharged on August 16, 1960.
On May 7, 1959, he was united in marriage to Diana Riggs in Cordell, OK. One son, Christian was born to this union. Gary lived in several places in the U.S. before returning to Atlantic in 2011. He worked as a truck driver and drove cross-country before retiring. He loved time on his motorcycle and going horseback riding.
He is survived by his son, Christian and wife, Julia Scherdin of Weatherford, OK; one granddaughter, Erica Scherdin of Clinton, OK; nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother, Frederick “Fred” Scherdin; and two sisters, Barbara Vanderburg and Marjorie Darnsted.
A Private Family Memorial Graveside Service will be held at a later date. He will be honored with Military Rites by the Atlantic Color Guard.
