Obituary for Catherine Elizabeth Ackerman

Catherine Elizabeth Ackerman, 80, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, January 30, 2019, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.

Catherine Elizabeth was born on August 23, 1938, in Atlantic, Iowa, and was the third of nine children born to James Burnell and Florence Amelia (Stangl) Anderson. Of her warm childhood memories, she would tell of going to Catholic school in her early years remembering the kindness shown towards her from the nuns. She would speak fondly of her parents describing her mother as sweet and her daddy as always tinkering on a project. She always wanted to be by his side helping him with whatever he was doing. Cathy often spoke of having to deliver the paper no matter what the weather may have been and having to WALK to school everyday just because that’s just how it was! Cathy also talked many times of her teenage job at the old bus depot in Atlantic. She met lots of people and had many fun memories working there.

Catherine married Don Davis at a young age and to this union daughters Jolene, Christy and Lori and son, Robin were born. Catherine later married Larry Ackerman and the couple lived in Griswold. To this union son, Patrick and daughter, Ann were born. While living in Griswold she worked at Casey’s for 14 years; a job she always enjoyed because of the people. She later returned to Atlantic, and worked at DeLong’s until her retirement.

Catherine looked forward to outings to the Casino with friends, and could usually be found settled in at the slots. Family was #1 in her life, and she rarely missed an opportunity to be together with them. Many summer trips were taken to Okoboji through the years with her girls and grandkids. Catherine enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s school activities, and especially loved watching their sporting events.

Her family will miss her dearly and are grateful for her unconditional love shown to them. She was a wonderful listener and never turned down a chance to talk not only to her family but friends as well. Catherine will be remembered by her family as a good, sweet and genuine person, having a witty sense of humor, being humble, and being wise from all experience’s life bestowed her. Without even knowing she was doing it, she was always giving her children words of wisdom that eventually they would realize to be true. Mother was honest, open, and not afraid to be straight forward when she felt she needed to be. On her 80th birthday dinner with her daughters she told them she wanted them to know it warmed her heart and made her proud to see how her children instilled a love so deep in their own children that it is carrying on to her great-grandchildren.

Catherine is survived by her children, Jolene (Todd) Leighton of Lewis, Christy (Bill) Pederson of Atlantic, Lori (Norman “Buke”) Petersen of Marne, Robin (Connie) Davis of Las Vegas, Patrick Ackerman of Griswold, and Ann Ackerman of Griswold; nine grandchildren, Rudy (Steph), Colton (Cara), Dillion, Devin, Haley, Brandon (Stacey), Jeremy (Felesha), Carly and Darci; step-grandchildren, Jake and Mike; six great-grandchildren, Rylie, Briar, Noah, Tinley, Harper, and Wm. Sage; step great-grandchildren, Ariana, Piper, Zoey, and Nolan; sister, Susie Benshoof of Ames; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Florence Anderson; and her siblings, Mary Ann (Royal) Shafer, Dave Anderson, Bob Anderson, Lucy Larson, Patsy (Andy) Anderson, Virgil Anderson, and Jimmy Joe Anderson.

Open visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., Sunday, February 3rd at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, February 4th at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic, with Father Chinna Devaraj as celebrant. Burial will be in the SS Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery.
