Obituary for Eldon Ortgies
Eldon Ortgies, 72, of Cumberland, Iowa, died Tuesday, December 25, 2018, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.
Eldon Roy Ortgies was born on October 9, 1946, in Atlantic, Iowa, the son of John Anton and Roseann Irene (Kearney) Ortgies. He attended school in Cumberland, graduating in the Class of 1965. Following graduation, he worked as a Surveyor for Cass County, and was later employed at Iron Specialties and at a local chicken farm. Always willing to help when he could he kept busy in later years doing various handyman jobs for friends and neighbors in the area. In addition to work, he also cared for his mother for many years, something his siblings were always grateful for because it allowed her the opportunity to stay in her own home longer.
Eldon was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed watching them on television and talking about the outcome of the games with family and friends. He loved to fish and took every opportunity possible to cast a line at a local lake or farm pond. Eldon had countless VHS tapes; a majority being old westerns.
Eldon is survived by his siblings, Ed (Donna) Ortgies of Atlantic, Mary Jane (Rollie) Platte of Omaha, NE, and Tim (Kim) Ortgies of Atlantic and nieces and nephews, Mike (Diane) Platte and their son, Cameron, Robin Wood and her children, Zoey, Lucien and Elisabeth, Philip Ortgies, Joshua (Mary) Ortgies and their children, Isabelle and Phineas, Chasity Hoeft and her children, Anne’ and Lenore, and Bo Frankline
He is preceded in death by his parents and infant brother, Jimmy Lee Ortgies.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, December 28, 2018, at Roland Funeral Home with Pastor Mike Bodkins of the First Lutheran Church, southeast of Wiota officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in the First Lutheran Cemetery. Immediately following the service a time of visitation, with refreshments being served, will be held at the funeral home.
