Joan "Jan&" Voss Johnson Retired radio and television personality Joan (Jan) Voss Johnson passed away peacefully at Cass County Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, March 10, 2009. Joan was born November 18, 1922 in Exira, Iowa to George and Evelyn Voss. She graduated from the Atlantic High School in Atlantic. Joan was widely known for programs concerning cooking, current events and women"s issues. She began at KJAN (the source of her "radio name&", Jan) in Atlantic, then to larger markets in Sioux City, and finally WMT-TV (now KGAN) in Cedar Rapids. She also became one of the first women to produce and direct her own programs, in addition to landing local interviews with the greats of her time including John F. Kennedy, Joan Crawford, Art Linkletter, Victor Borge and many others. In addition to her lengthy broadcast career, Mrs. Johnson served in the WAVES in WWII, in roles at the Grant Wood Area Education Agency, Schaper Manufacturing and, after retirement, as a teacher and photojournalist at the Murray Christian School in Pakistan, as well as a volunteer in a leper colony in Thailand. She was preceded in death by her first husband, James F. Presnall, her second husband, Conrad L. Johnson, and by her daughter, Dawn Ann Bissell. She is survived by her children, Lisa Ann Presnall, Scott Conrad Johnson; stepchildren Joyce Blanks, Paul Johnson, Harry Johnson and David Johnson, 19 grandchildren, 29great grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren; and immediate local relations include the Saran and Scott Robinson family of Atlantic.Funeral InformationThere will be open visitation from 8:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. through Sunday, March 15 at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic.
