Leopold "Leo" Voggesser Leopold "Leo" Voggesser of Avoca, Iowa, passed away on Monday, March 28, 2011, at the Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 88 years. Leo was born to Mathias and Helene (Koch) Voggesser on November 28, 1922 in Atlantic, Iowa. He graduated from the Audubon High School in 1940. In 1943, Leo enlisted in the U. S. Army during WWII. He served in the Philippines and he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Citation Ribbon, one Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Leo was discharged from the service on December 18, 1945. On June 20, 1948, Leo was united in marriage to Betty Knutson in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Leo was employed at the Iowa Department of Transportation as a weight officer for 39 years retiring January 21, 1985. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic, the VFW, the American Legion, and the 8 Ball Flying Club. His special interests were flying, hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife Betty of Avoca, Ia; brothers, Paul Voggesser of Hancock, IA; Roy Voggesser of Denison, IA, Bob Voggesser of Atlantic, IA and Harold Voggesser of Bolivar, MO; over 20 nieces and nephews. Leo is preceded in death his parents; a sister Dorothy Lane and a brother Max Voggesser.Funeral Information There will be open visitation daily at the Roland Funeral Home from 8:00 - 5:30 with a family visitation Friday evening, April 1, from 5:00 - 7:00. Services for Leo will be held on Saturday, April 2, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic at 10:30 am with Pastor Kenneth Davidson officiating. Interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.
