Obituary for Phil Marshall
Phillip “Phil” Marshall, 75, of Atlantic, Iowa, died Tuesday, March 16, 2021, at Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic.
Phillip Eugene was born on December 15, 1945, in Atlantic, Iowa, the son of Paul Thomas, Sr. and Dolores Eileen (Hough) Marshall. He looked forward to spending time with his cousins at the farm. Phil attended school in Atlantic where most of his friends were of the Catholic faith; eventually becoming a joke that you had to be Catholic to be friends with Phil. Of course, that was not true at all as he never knew a stranger. He was quick witted and quick with a joke. Phil participated in football (#47), track and an “occasional” drag race; graduating in the Class of 1964. Following graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army, serving his time overseas in Germany.
On June 26, 1971, he was united in marriage to Patricia Anne Lowers at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic. This June the couple would have celebrated 50 years together and he was trying so hard to get to that milestone. Phil loved his wife and his family with all of his heart.
Phil worked at Schildberg Construction as an end loader operator for over 30 years. He had so many sayings that we could not list them all. He liked to say, “God gave me courage and family so there is no need to complain," “if I could put on my boots I would," and “You can tell an Irish man, but you can’t tell him much." Phil lived life to the fullest and was often encouraged by a poem named “The Dash."
He was a lifetime member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church where he was active in the Knights of Columbus, missioning for the Right to Life Campaign and served as a confirmation moderator.
It didn’t take long in talking with Phil that you knew the abundant amount of love and loyalty he had for his faith, family by blood and friends whom he called family. He tried his hardest to be at every event his kids were in. Many family friends' children referred to him as their second dad. He was always willing to encourage you, be patient to see you succeed and would intervene when he needed to. He was quick to tell you his kids were his world and made his buttons pop.
He loved hunting, bowling and golfing. Phil’s sweet tooth was no secret; a can of Coke or Pepsi, Oreos, Hershey’s bars and Lifesaver Wint-O-Greens were never out of reach. The grandkids looked forward to scooter rides to a nearby playground and him reading them Dr. Suess while sharing some of his treats. A few other things you may have noticed if you knew Phil was that he always greeted with his radiant smile, he loved to talk and tell stories, he was strong-willed and had a laugh so strong that when he laughed so did you. He never called you by your real name just the nickname he had come up with for you.
Phil is survived by his wife, Pat of Atlantic; children, Mindy (Matt) Clem of McAllen, Texas, Mike (Mandy) Marshall of Hilo, Hawaii, and Karen (Shawn) Menagh of Highland Ranch, Colorado; six grandchildren, Laura Clem, Brock Marshall, Makenna Menagh, Taylor Clem, Colby Clem and Gavin “George” Menagh; sister, Mary Ellen (Glenn) Askew of Wichita Falls, Texas; brother-in-law, Sam Spinello of Malibu, California; sisters-in-law, Linda (Ross) Eilts of Massena and Barb (Jay) Mackey of Maryville, Missouri; several cousins, nieces and nephews; and many long-time friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; mother and father-in-law, Rich and Doris Lowers; son, Paul Richard Marshall; sister, Julie Spinello; and brother, Paul (Tom) Marshall, Jr.
Open visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m., Monday, March 22nd at Roland Funeral Home, followed by visitation with the family present from 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. A Rosary service, with sharing of memories by the family, will be held at 6:00 p.m., Monday. At the conclusion of the evening the family wishes to extend an invite to join them in the Pines Room at Oinkers Lounge to continue sharing memories and celebrating Phil’s life.
A Mass of Christian Burial, with the Knights of Columbus Honor Guard in attendance, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 23rd at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church. The service will be live streamed and available at, www.sspeterpaulandmary.org. Burial will be at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, with military honors by the Atlantic Color Guard.
Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation to the #32 Strong as Steele Fund.
