Obituary for Philip "Flip" Seddon

Philip "Flip" Seddon, 71, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away at home Thursday, May 14, 2020, after a courageous battle with prostate cancer.

Philip Marshall Seddon was born on November 11, 1948, in Malden, Massachusetts, the son of Kenneth and Eula Jane (Marshall) Seddon. He grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, and was active in swim team, ice skating, golf and bowling. He attended Westside High School; graduating in the Class of 1973. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served his country in Vietnam.

After his discharge he moved to Carroll, Iowa, where he started a family with the birth of his son, Chad in 1977. Many years later he remarried and moved to Atlantic, Iowa, and started working for Cappers Insurance based out of Topeka, Kansas; working in their Midwest Region. Being remarried gave him the opportunity and blessing to be a father figure to his step-children, Lisa, Jill and Jeff; a huge part and support system to them for many years. He was also blessed with another daughter, Carly in 1992.

Philip’s personable and outgoing personality made him the perfect fit for the insurance industry. His courageous smile and hard work ethic rewarded him salesman of the month and year multiple times. Cappers Insurance also had bonus trips you could win that he always strived to receive. Rarely ever falling short of that goal he traveled on numerous trips across the United States with his wife and kids. As a family they also took yearly trips to Colorado and Branson. Other memorable trips included watching his beloved Nebraska Cornhuskers at home as season ticket holders or away games which included a chance to watch them at the Rose Bowl. Did we mention that the only team in Philip’s eyes were the Nebraska Cornhuskers, GO BIG RED?

Following retirement, in addition to many odd jobs, he continued to sell insurance for local agencies and worked at Hy-Vee and Kum and Go. A big part of this free time on Saturday nights was spent helping Jason O’Brien’s pit crew at the race track. He was also an active member at the Elks Lodge and Nishna Hills Golf Course. Golf was a huge part of his life taking every chance he could to be out on the course; even teaching Carly at a young age, it was their thing. Monday and Wednesday nights were reserved for time with the guys; Monday was dinner and Wednesday was Poker night at Lucky’s.

There was no doubt that Flip could bring a smile to your face within seconds of being in conversation. His kind soul, mixed with his need to joke around made his personality one that was loved by many and will be deeply missed. Flip was a loyal dad, grandpa and friend. His love was unconditional and there was never a question whether he would stand by your side even though he would often say, “ --------, what have you done now?” which was his way of saying he didn’t approve of your choices. There were times he may have brought that upon himself as after a few No’s he could usually be persuaded to say Yes. The love he had for his granddaughters had no end; they were wrapped around his little finger! He loved the time he was able to spend with them and attended their school concerts and the Father/Daughter dance. In recent weeks he had the opportunity to fulfill one last request and took a trip to Colorado with Carly and granddaughters as well as one last ride around the golf course.

Philip will be missed by his daughter, Carly (Mike Henson) Seddon of Atlantic; son, Chad (Chessa) Seddon of Michigan; grandchildren, Kyra and Khloe Seddon-Coleman and Alexander, Owen and Isaac Henson; brothers, Dick (Dori) Seddon of Arkansas and Ken (Karol) Seddon of Las Vegas; and nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Jane Seddon.

I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one.
I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when day is done.
I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways.
Of happy times, and laughing times, and bright and sunny days.
I’d like the tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun.
Of happy memories that I leave behind when day is done.

I Am Not Gone

I am not gone
I remain here beside you
Just in a different form
Look for me in your heart
And there you will find me
In our love which forever lives on
In those moments when you feel alone
Look for me in your thoughts
And there you will find me
In sweet memories that burn strong
Every time a tear
Forms in your beautiful eyes
Look up to the heavens
And there you will see me
Smiling down from God’s glorious skies.
