Joe P. Riesberg, 93, of Griswold, and formerly of Atlantic, Adair and Carroll, passed away Friday, December 28, 2018, at the Griswold Care Center.

Joseph Peter Riesberg was born on February 9, 1925, at his family’s farm north of Templeton, Iowa, the middle of 11 children born to Joseph Anton and Mary (Bellinghousen) Riesberg. He attended Sacred Heart School in Templeton and worked on the family farm. On December 27, 1943, he enlisted in the United States Army and served his country during WWII as a marksman and cook. Joe was honorably discharged on April 25, 1946, and he returned to the family farm.

On April 26, 1949, he was united in marriage to Mildred Feld, and to this union six children were born. Joe continued his love of farming after their marriage, and later had the opportunity to purchase Mildred’s family’s farm North East of Carroll.

On August 5, 1974, he was united in marriage to Karen Kimball in Omaha, Nebraska, and they were blessed with one daughter. After their marriage the couple settled in Adair, and he continued farming and also started a carpentry business. In 1987, the couple sold the farm and moved to Atlantic. After moving, Joe kept busy in carpentry and maintaining their rental properties; not officially retiring until his late 80’s.

Joe enjoyed going to the farm auctions and purchasing old tractors, cleaning them up and getting them ready for this friend Ron Wittrock to paint. He a was a wonderful dancer and enjoyed country music and the big bands. His love for his children showed in his big smile and laughter when they would all get together for family gatherings. Joe was a hard worker and good provider and instilled his good work ethics in all his children. Joe was a lifetime member of VFW and American Legion. He was a member of St. Lawrence in Carroll, St. John’s in Adair, later SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic and most recently Our Lady of Grace in Griswold.

Joe will be deeply missed by his wife of 44 years, Karen; children, Fran (Darrell) Tulley of California, Elaine (Larry) Garaghty of Minnesota, Nancy (John) Skoumal of West Des Moines, Jane Gretteman of Carroll, Mary Brown of Glidden, Mark Riesberg of Lytton, and Abby (Jon) De Jong of Atlantic; 16 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; sisters, Florita Sibbel of Carroll and Margie (John) Sibbel of Manning; brother, Leon (Marlene) Riesberg of Arizona; sisters-in-law, Leona Riesberg and Dorothy Riesberg both of Carroll; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters and brothers-in-law, Catherine (George) Vogel, Dorothy (Raymond) Halbur, and Bernice (Leo) Schroeder; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Leonard (Phyllis) Riesberg, Irvan Riesberg, Lavern (Stella) Riesberg, and Earl Riesberg.
