Obituary for Bernard Steffens, Jr.

Lifelong Cass County residents, Bernard Steffens, Jr., 82, died Wednesday, December 5, 2018, at Heritage House in Atlantic and Marcia Steffens, 74, died Tuesday, July 5, 2011, at her home.

Bernard Leo was born on August 11, 1936, in Anita, Iowa, the son of Bernard Johannes, Sr. and Pauline D. (Bannick) Steffens. He graduated from Wiota High School in 1955. In 1959, he enlisted in the Iowa Army National Guard and was honorably discharged on February 17, 1963. In addition to his own farm operation, he also offered services of custom farming, hay baling and applying anhydrous. In his later years he was a member of the Elks Lodge in Atlantic.

Marcia Carol was born on December 18, 1936, in Atlantic, Iowa, the daughter of Eldon Frank and Della Ellen (Smith) Gaylord. Marcia graduated from Atlantic High School in 1955. Marcia will be remembered for her sweet personality, friendliness, and love for everyone.

The couple was united in marriage on September 9, 1956, at Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic. They were the parents of two children, Scott and Deb. Junior and Marcia traveled the United States for a number of years showing their classic cars that they collected and restored together; winning countless trophies and awards. They were members of the VTCI – Vintage Thunderbird Club International, VTKC – Vintage Thunderbird Kansas City, and the Midwest Thunderbird Club. They generally did everything together and when she was diagnosed with ALS, Junior was her constant and total care-giver at home until she passed away in 2011.

Junior and Marcia are survived by their children, Scott (Renea) Steffens of Atlantic and Deb (Dennis) Clausen of Creston; grandchildren, Matt Steffens, Lindsey Manderson, Natalie Saltzman, Anthony Beck, Levi Stice, Erik Clausen, Michelle Sevier and Beth Madison; great-grandchildren, Cameron Steffens, Makynzie Steffens, Ethan Steffens, Hailey Huffman, Mariah Huffman, Quintin Steffens, Trey Steffens, Asascia Manderson, Jaliyah Manderson, Kaylynn Saltzman, Annabella Saltzman, Tyler Brawdy, Haley Brawdy, Taymen Brawdy, Faith Forester, Riley Hansen, Austin King, Brayton Clausen, Garrick Clausen, Creighton Clausen, Alaina Liesener, Kerrigan Liesener, Ty Sevier, Beckum Sevier, Kayden Sevier, Ellee Madison, and Max Madison; special friend, Jo Wendt; Junior’s sisters, Mildred Harris and Norma Buckingham; and other relatives and friends.

They are preceded in death by their parents; Junior’s sister and brother-in-law, Lois (Tom) McDermott; and brothers-in-law, Norris Buckingham and Terry Harris.

Visitation with the family present will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday, December 10th at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic.

A Celebration of Life Service for Junior and Marcia will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 11th at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. A private family burial will be held at a later date at Atlantic Cemetery.
