Obituary for Esther H. Fredrickson

Esther H. Fredrickson
Esther Fredrickson, 101, of Avoca and formerly of Walnut, Iowa, died Tuesday, October 9, 2018, at Avoca Specialty Care.
Esther Hattie was born on September 30, 1917, near Elk Horn, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Susie Fredrickson. Her love of life on the farm and horses started at an early age as she worked alongside her father; those memories being some she always cherished. She attended country school at Clay Township #8 in Shelby County, Iowa.
On March 3, 1942, she was united in marriage to L. Wilfred Fredrickson in Omaha, Nebraska. Following their marriage, the couple made their home at Wilfred’s parents’ farm, and raised Angus cattle, hogs, chickens and also grew row crops and hay. Day in and day out Esther was right there beside Wilfred dedicated to life on the farm; a true farm girl to the end. Many trips were made to the stockyards, AK-SAR-BEN, Chicago and also to surrounding county and state fairs.
She enjoyed music whether it was sitting down at the piano next to her daughter, Shirley after school or dancing to Polka. Esther knew her way around the kitchen, always preparing delicious meals, cinnamon rolls being her specialty. In later years, she and Wilfred enjoyed packing a small lunch and meeting friends at local lakes for an afternoon of fishing. She was a member of the Elk Horn Lutheran Church and the Rorbeck Neighborhood Sewing Club.
Esther is survived by her daughter, Shirley Christensen of Marne; grandsons, Craig Christensen of Walnut and Troy (Mary) Christensen of Elk Horn; grandson-in-law, Rick Thiesen of Granger; great-grandchildren, Cole Thiesen and Kyra Thiesen, both of Granger; step-great grandchildren, Tara (Cory) Scholl of Griswold and their children, Tanner and Cooper and Amber (Kory) Chalupa of Waukee and their children, Owen and Makayla; nephew, Larry (Madonna) Nisson of Atlantic; and other extended family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Susie Fredrickson; husband, L. Wilfred Fredrickson; son-in-law, Dale Christensen; granddaughter, Jan Thiesen; a brother; sister, Vera (Vick) Nisson; brother-in-law, Andrew (Mable) Fredrickson; nephew, Lynn Nisson; and niece, Clarice Christensen.
Visitation with the family will be held prior to the service starting at 9:30 a.m., Saturday at the church.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 13, 2018, at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church in Elk Horn, Iowa, with Pastor Keith Menter officiating. Burial will be in the Elk Horn Lutheran Cemetery.
Roland Funeral Service is caring for Esther’s family and her arrangements. Condolences may be left at www.rolandfuneralservice.com
