Obituary for Earl Blunk

Earl L. Blunk, 74, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Saturday, September 29, 2018, at Atlantic Specialty Care.

The son of Wayne and Maxine (Johnson) Blunk, he was born December 15, 1943, in Atlantic, Iowa. He attended Atlantic Community Schools, graduating with the High School Class of 1962. Following graduation, he served in the Iowa Army National Guard for two years. Earl worked for a couple of years as a farm hand for several area friends. In 1978, he began working at Mahle Manufacturing in Atlantic until his retirement in 2008. On September 25, 1987, he was united in marriage to Carolynn Wickey Crum in Chillicothe, Missouri. Heartbreak struck in September of 2014, when Earl suffered a stroke and much medical attention was needed so he made his home at Atlantic Specialty Care.

As a young man, Earl was a member of the Elk’s Lodge #445 in Atlantic. An outdoorsman at heart, he was an avid hunter and fisherman. He always had a large flower and vegetable garden that he enjoyed tending. Camping and taking drives with Carolynn and their pet dogs around the countryside were favorite relaxing activities. But most of all he loved spending time with his family, and pet dogs.

He is survived by his wife, Carolynn Blunk of Atlantic; children, Kathy Dorsey of Corning, David Crum of Atlantic and Carrie (Tim Snyder) Kirchhoff of Lewis; grandchildren, Tonya (Aaron) Inman of Prescott, Mike (Sarah) Dorsey of Massena, Kaitlyn (Jeff Wood) of Corning, Quinn (Brian) Esbeck of Atlantic, Cydney (Chris) Karstens of Norman, OK, Jayney (David Rosario) Hoegh of Honolulu, Hawaii; great grandchildren, Anna, Isabelle, Dillon, and Lucas Inman, Calvin Dorsey, Wyatt and Tanner Wood, Willow Esbeck, Cambry, Covi, and Caiya Karstens; brother and sisters, Mary Jo Blunk, Rosella Blunk, David (Carol) Blunk, and Leita Blunk all of Atlantic; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Arnold Horn of Pleasantville, Barb Ward of Grant, Ralph (Judy) Wickey of Massena, and Jacque Wickey of Atlantic; niece and nephew, Melissa Blunk and Greg Blunk, both of Atlantic; his best furry friend, Pheobe; and other nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Maxine Blunk; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Harold and Arlene Wickey; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Nedra Horn, Jack Wright, and Howard Ward; and many special pet dogs.
