Obituary for Phillip "Phil" Chinitz

Print
Phillip “Phil” Chinitz, 86, of Atlantic, died early Sunday evening, August 19, 2018, at Heritage House in Atlantic.

The son of Esidor and Anna (Geldfond) Chinitz, he was born September 23, 1931, in Atlantic, Iowa. He spent most of his life in Atlantic and graduated with the AHS Class of 1949. He was a staff member of the high school newspaper, The Javelin. In his early working years, he helped his dad in the iron business and worked at the post office during the rush season. Phil served in the United States Army for two years and one day, and was stationed in the motor pool at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri and Fort McCoy in Wisconsin. Following his service, he accompanied his mother on a trip to Israel to visit relatives.

Phil became the news reporter for the Atlantic News-Telegraph, working for 58 years. He said he reported “just the facts.” His job led him to the office of the Cass County Extension Service where he met their secretary and suddenly the news of the Extension Office was covered considerably more extensively than previous times. Two years later, on October 30, 1958, he was united in marriage to Trena Corrine Bartleson.

He enjoyed a longtime interest in stamps, coins and currency.

Phil is survived by his loving wife of fifty-nine years, Trena Chinitz of Atlantic; daughter, Anna Burk of Jarrell, Texas; a sister, Marcia Goldberg, her husband, Sam and their son, David.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Esidor and Anna Chinitz and brothers, Ben and Manuel Chinitz.

The family will greet friends Thursday evening from five p.m. to seven p.m., August 23, 2018, at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic.

A prayer service will be held at one o’clock p.m., Friday, August 24, 2018, at Roland Funeral Home with Chaplain Jean Plourde of St. Croix Hospice officiating. Burial will be in the Atlantic Cemetery, with military honors by the Atlantic Color Guard.

Memorials may be made to the family for designation at a later date to charities that Phil and Trena supported.

Roland Funeral Service is caring for Phil’s family and his arrangements. Condolences may be left at www.rolandfuneralservice.com.
