Joan Weirich, 86, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Thursday, August 2, 2018, at the Griswold Care Center.

The daughter of Thomas “Denny” Denman and Evelyn Cleo (Woolsey) Barringer, she was born December 31, 1931, in Atlantic. She grew up in Atlantic, graduating from the Atlantic High School in 1949.

On March 8, 1953, she was united in marriage to Glenn Dean Weirich in Atlantic. The couple made their home on a farm near Lewis. They enjoyed attending various square dances and looked forward to getting together with the neighborhood club for a game of Pitch. As a mother of six, she was always on the go, tending to normal duties in addition to harvesting her large garden and cleaning up after milking for the day was complete. The loss of Glenn in 1979 left a huge void in Joan’s heart; the family always cherishing the blessing of his memory.

In 1991, she moved to Atlantic. Joan took great pride in the upkeep of her home; brightening the exterior with her various flowers. After moving to Atlantic she started working at Bonnesens 5 & 10 Store; employed there for nearly 20 years. Joan loved going to work to visit with the customers; some of them only knowing her as the “candy lady.” She delighted in every aspect of her job, even down to tidying the shelves. If a meal out was in order, Pizza Hut and KFC were a sure bet; those were her favorites. Joan loved to play BINGO, and every Christmas the family looked forward to participating and the sometimes-interesting prizes that went along with winning.

Joan will be deeply missed by her children, Karen (Bill) Couldry of St. Joseph, MO, Shirley (Richard) Conry of Griswold, IA, Diane (Brent) Milner of Griswold, IA, Deb (Marvin) Ray of Omaha, NE, Duane (Gwen) Weirich of Lewis, IA and Dale (Laura) Weirich of Council Bluffs, IA; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and her brother, Jimmy Barringer of Fairmont, MN.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glenn; son-in-law, Jake Schwartzkopf; sisters and brothers-in-law, Virginia (Kenny) Bolz, June (Harry) Martin, and Nancy (Bill) Armstrong; brothers and sister-in-law, Billie (Connie) Barringer and Jerry Barringer, and sister-in-law, Fern Barringer.

Open visitation will be on Sunday, August 5, 2018, at Roland Funeral Home from 1:00 p.m. until time of visitation with the family. The family will be present to greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Sunday.
