Obituary for Ethel Oathoudt

Ethel Oathoudt
Ethel Oathoudt, 98, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Thursday, June 14, 2018, at Allen Place in Atlantic.

Ethel Helen Caroline was born at her parent’s home on June 12, 1920, in rural Pottawattamie County, Iowa, the daughter of Albert and Martha (Grulke) Brehmer. She was baptized on December 12, 1920, and later confirmed at the Peace Evangelical Church in Atlantic. Ethel attended rural school in Layton Township through the 8th grade and graduated from Atlantic High School in 1938. While she was in school she worked as a nanny and housekeeper for a local pastor’s family, and later worked at Dick and Janie’s Café in Atlantic.

On December 28, 1938, she married Robert “Bob” Oathoudt at the Peace Evangelical parsonage in Atlantic. The couple was blessed with five children, LeRoy, Jeanie, Dennis, Carol Sue and Debbie. The family lived in the Avoca and Wiota areas and farmed and raised chickens in the areas of Lewis, Walnut and Atlantic. While living in Avoca, Ethel worked at the Avoca hatchery and later at the canning factory in Atlantic for a short time before deciding the season had come to be a full-time homemaker and care for her family. In 1972, they moved to the west edge of Atlantic where she resided until 2010, when she moved to Allen Place.

Ethel was a member of the United Church of Christ, where she was an active member serving in any way she could. She was also a member of the ETC Neighbor Ladies Club and the Moose Lodge where she held many different offices. During her kids’ childhood she served as a 4-H Leader for many years. She knew her way around the kitchen; always making delicious meals and took time to pass those skills and recipes on to her children. Ethel spent as much time as she could outdoors, whether it was working in the orchard or tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. They took many adventures camping, including a trip to Las Vegas and drove their van across the United States, coast to coast. She looked forward to visits to their home on Lake Panorama. In her later years, she enjoyed playing BINGO, knitting, crocheting, and quilting. Above all, Ethel loved her family and was quick to tell you how proud she was of her grandchildren.

Ethel is survived by her daughters, Jeanie McMullen of Atlantic, Carol Sue (Bob) Hogueison of Kimballton, and Debbie Metheny of Atlantic; daughter-in-law, Karen Oathoudt of Atlantic; grandchildren, Rhonda (Sam) Fager, Terry Oathoudt (Cindy), Krista (Brad) McDonald, John Oathoudt, Jason (Holly) Oathoudt, Joel (Sherri) Schlueter, Jill (Chris) Adams, Gabe (Lindsay) Hogueison, Hope Metheny (Darnell), and Stephanie (Josh) Waters ; great-grandchildren; Brian (Andrea) Fager, Brad Fager (Taylor), Kristi Wingert, Jake (Sheri) Karns, Joey Flathers, Matthew McDonald, Melissa McDonald, Brandon McDonald, Levi Oathoudt, Brian Oathoudt (Kyja), Caroline Oathoudt, Helen Oathoudt, Jake Oathoudt, Joey Oathoudt, Joaquin Wailes, Leighton Wailes, Jake Wailes, Brady Schlueter, Reid Schlueter, Clarie Schlueter, Brock Schlueter, Carson Adams, Denisyn Adams, Gunnar Hogueison, Maverick Waters, and Briar Waters; great-great-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Nolan, Kaelyn, Emmett, Kylee, Brayden, Alexis, Deegan, Ty, Avah, and Emery, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
