Obituary for Beatrice "Bea" M. Lehnhardt

Beatrice Lehnhardt, 89, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2018, at Allen Place in Atlantic.

Bea was born June 9, 1928, in Hastings. Iowa, to Raymond and Opal (Colvin) Campbell. She grew up in the area around Oakland, Iowa. Bea attended a one-room country school near Lewis, Iowa, and graduated from Oakland High School in 1945.

On October 31, 1946, Bea and Harold Herman were married in the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic. Bea and Harold made Atlantic home and were blessed with three daughters, Pamela Rae, Deborah Kay and Kathleen Joyce.

In 1954, Bea joined and was baptized into the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic; where she remained a longtime member. During her girls’ childhoods she was actively involved in the church as a member of church circles as well as a Sunday School and Bible School teacher. Although Bea’s church membership was predominantly with the Methodist Church, she was very proud that both of her grandfathers were ministers in Assembly of God Churches.

Bea later married Harry Hjortshoj on September 2, 1962, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Atlantic. Bea and Harry both enjoyed their membership at the Elks Lodge. Harry served as Exalted Ruler and Bea was a member of Does. During that time, Bea was also an active member of the Cass County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Harry passed away on January 14, 1984.

Bea was employed at several retail stores on Main Street in Atlantic. She worked at JC Penny and Grahams Department Stores and worked the remainder of her employed years in local jewelry stores. She enjoyed working several years at each store, first Hanke Jewelry, then Wolfe Jewelry and finally Geis Perry Jewelry.

It was after working at Geis that Bea became reacquainted with Russell Lehnhardt of Walnut, IA. They had originally met in the post-World War II years when Harold and Bea spent many enjoyable evenings at Russ’ establishment, The Gardens, in Walnut. Bea and Russ had a 12 year long courtship, and were married on October 25, 2005, at the First Presbyterian Church in Walnut. Bea and Russ made their home in Atlantic. They shared a love for music and dancing, Scrabble and the daily crossword puzzles in the newspaper. Other pastimes Bea enjoyed were reading and gardening. She had several treasured plants in her flower gardens that had followed her to every home she had in Atlantic. Those plants are now cherished by her daughters in their gardens. After several years, Bea and Russ left their home on Bryn Mawr Blvd to live at Allen Place. Russ passed away on November 1, 2014.

Bea remained at Allen Place for a year after Russ passed away, and then moved in with her youngest daughter, Kathy. Due to complications related to Parkinson’s disease, Bea returned to Allen Place in May of 2017.

Survivors include her daughters, Pam (Don) Prall of Atlantic, Deb Vollmer of Omaha, and Kathy Galles of Council Bluffs; grandchildren, Paul D. Prall of Atlantic, Stacia (Todd) Taylor of Lyman, Heather Prall of Atlantic, Missy (Steve) Garrison of Columbus, OH, Jimmy (Kelly) Vollmer of Omaha, Benjamin Galles of Omaha, and Daniel Galles of Omaha; 11 great grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Raymond “Gene” (Karen) Campbell of Montague, CA, Jo Shea of Hills, IA, and Joyce (Ron) Krug of Monona, WI; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Bea was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Opal Campbell; husbands, Harry Hjortshoj and Russell Lehnhardt; sister, Ruby Rollins; brother, Bob Campbell; nephew, Bruce Rollins; and son-in-law, Denny Vollmer.

Bea's family wishes to thank the staff members of both Allen Place and St. Croix Hospice. The attention and care given to Bea was a great solace to her and her family.

Visitation with the family will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, May 20th at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 21st at the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic. Burial will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Oaklawn Cemetery in Oakland, Iowa.

Her Journey’s Just Begun

Don’t think of her as gone away
her journey’s just begun.
Life holds so many facets
this earth is only one.

Just think of her as resting
from the sorrow and the tears
in a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days and years.

Think how she must be wishing
that we could know today
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass away.

And think of her as living
in the hearts of those she touched
for nothing loved is ever lost-
and she was loved so much.
