Obituary for Phyllis L Kay

Phyllis L. Kay, 80, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Saturday, May 5, 2018, at Atlantic Specialty Care.

Phyllis Lea Stewart was born on August 7, 1937, in Clarinda, Iowa, born to Jim and Dorothy (Knowles) Stewart. During her childhood, she lived for a short time in California and in Red Oak, Iowa, before settling back in Clarinda. On September 18, 1954, she was united in marriage to James Edward Goff in Bedford, Iowa. To this union two children were born, Randall and Ronda. In 1957, the family made Atlantic home. While in Atlantic, Phyllis worked as a secretary for Wilbert Hoegh, Marion Perdue, and Roland Funeral Service. The staff at Roland’s recall her mind for precise detail and excellence in bookwork for over 25 years.

In August of 2003, she began dating Stuart Kay and the couple later married on January 31, 2004, at the First United Presbyterian Church in Atlantic. The couple enjoyed their daily walks, no matter the weather conditions, around the neighborhood.

Phyllis was an enthusiastic member of an annual women’s bowling league, a former member of the Atlantic Does and a volunteer at The First Christian Church in Atlantic assisting with floral arrangements.

Phyllis took pride in doing her own yardwork and loved using the riding lawnmower. Phyllis was an avid reader and thoroughly enjoyed mystery novels. She crocheted countless items throughout the years; kitchen towel hooks being a specialty. Phyllis looked forward to gathering with friends at local restaurants for coffee or lunch.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Stuart Kay; children, Randall (Lynn) Goff of Arnold, Maryland and Ronda (Vernon) Dawson of Atlanta, Georgia; step-children, Roger (Becky) Kay of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Colene (Doug) Hahn of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Teresa Kay of Omaha, Nebraska; grandchildren, Michele (Eric Hurdle) Dawson, Ryan (Suchi Mohanty) Goff, Bethany (Jeremy) Sterner, and Erin (Matt) Miller; step-grandchildren, Nate Kay and Cole and Claire Hahn; brothers, Carl Ridenour of Des Moines, Iowa, Richard (Shirley) Ridenour of Hopkins, Missouri, and Mike Ridenour of Hopkins, Missouri; sister-in-law, Marian Stewart of Cumberland, Iowa, and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, James Goff in 1993; and her brothers, Bill Stewart, Bob Stewart and Jim Stewart.

The family will greet friends on Friday, May 11, 2018, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Roland Funeral Home.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 12, 2018, at the First United Presbyterian Church in Atlantic. A private family burial will take place prior to the service in the Atlantic Cemetery.
