Obituary for Eileen Rose Dennis
Eileen Dennis, 100, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Sunday, April 22, 2018, at Caring Acres Nursing and Rehab in Anita.
Eileen Rose (Johnson) Dennis, was born July 27, 1917, in Atlantic, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew and Katherine (Burke) Johnson. She was baptized and confirmed at the SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic. She attended Atlantic Community Schools in Atlantic graduating with the High School Class of 1935. She then studied at St. Joseph Nursing School in Omaha where she received her LPN license.
She was united in marriage to David Francis Dennis in Maryville, Missouri. Six children: David, George, Bob, Carol, Mike and Bill were born to this union. They lived in Pekin, Illinois and Carter Lake, Iowa, for a short time before returning and making their home in Atlantic. She was employed at the Jones Hospital and the Atlantic Hospital before starting the Dennis Nursing Home in 1948, which she owned and operated for 30 years before retiring in 1978. Her husband, David, passed away February 5, 1989. Eileen continued to enjoy her home until well after her 100th birthday. She moved to Caring Acres Nursing Home in Anita on November 28, 2017.
Eileen was a member and Eucharistic Minister of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic and was an active member in the BPW. She was a founding member of the Iowa Nursing Home Association. Eileen loved to go shopping and always had a large assortment of plants and flowers both inside and outside her home. She continued the family tradition of making her home open to family, friends, and those in need. Most of all she loved her family and was happiest spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband David; her sons: George Dennis and Mike Dennis; her parents; her infant brother Dale Johnson; and her sister Kathryn Johnston.
Eileen is survived by her children: David and wife Patricia Dennis of Redding, California, Bob and wife Pat Dennis of Atlantic, Iowa, Carol Hansen of Olathe, Kansas, Bill “Rock” and wife Cathy Dennis of Anita, Iowa; her daughter-in-law Betty Dennis of Atlantic; 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 7 great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation with the family will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 25th at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic, with a Rosary service being held at 6:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 26th at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic. Burial will be in the SS Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery.
