Obituary for Joseph J. Vogl

Joseph Vogl, 85, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Saturday, December 2, 2017, at Atlantic Specialty Care.

Joseph John Vogl was born on August 16, 1932, in Halbur, Iowa, one of eight born to John Anton and Elizabeth (Uhlenkamp) Vogl. He attended school in Templeton, and as a teenager worked as a hired man for neighbors.

On February 15, 1955, he was united in marriage to Lorraine Steffes in Roselle, Iowa, and they made their home west of Gray, Iowa. In 1956, he enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Lewis in Washington as a helicopter mechanic. After returning from the service the couple remained living west of Gray, until moving south of Manning. In 1967, they moved to farms in the Atlantic and Cumberland areas. During this time he also farmed, raised livestock and milked cows. In 1997, he retired from farming and moved into Atlantic. Never one to sit still, he stayed busy maintaining their rental properties and working part-time mowing seven county parks for Cass County Conservation. There wasn’t a job he couldn’t handle; never hiring work out. He was a jack of all trades from small jobs to ones as big as constructing a machine shed and a hog house.

He was a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. Joseph enjoyed fishing and the many trips he and Lorraine took through the years. An avid reader; westerns were some of his favorites. Lorraine always appreciated the help she received around the house after he had worked all day on the farm; always doing the dishes after supper while she tended to the kids. There was never a doubt how happy he was when the grandkids were around; he lit up instantly. He loved his grandkids, and always smiled from ear to ear when they were around.

Joseph is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lorraine; children, Larry Vogl, Dennis (Kathy) Vogl, Sharon (Steve) Paul, Kenneth (Mardell) Vogl, Barbara Vogl, Linda (Kent) Schmitt, Charles Vogl, and Diane (Marve) Eblen; 20 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; siblings, Betty Danner, John (Adella) Vogl, Earl (Laurel) Vogl, Dorothy (Pete) Danner, Mary Ann (Norbert) Kasperbauer, and Levan Eich; brothers and sisters-in-law, Sister Marcella Steffes, Frank Mader, Roman (Arlene) Steffes, LaVerne Steffes, Norma (Fred) Gosch, Robert (Rache) Steffes, Arlene (Melvin) Meier, Marian Pickhinke and Carol (Don) Mader; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Elizabeth Vogl; brothers and sister-in-law, LeRoy (Barbara) Vogl; brothers-in-law, Leo Danner and Mike Eich; sister-in-law, Doris Mader and Barbara Steffes; and parents-in-law, John and Anna Steffes.

A Rosary Service will be held Monday, December 4th, 6:00 p.m. at Roland Funeral Service, followed by visitation with the family present until 8:00 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 5th, at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic. Burial will be held in the SS Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, with military honors by the Atlantic Color Guard.
