Obituary for Roger W. Nelson

Roger W. Nelson
Roger W. Nelson, 79, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Monday, October 9, 2017, at his home.

Roger Wayne Nelson was born on December 7, 1937, in Atlantic, Iowa, the son of Donald James and Rose Della Hazel (Cron) Nelson. At an early age he began visiting his grandparents, Julius A. and Elizabeth Nelson on weekends and during the summer at their farm; quickly realizing he loved life on the farm. Roger loved to share stories of his childhood and the many pranks he played on his siblings and friends. In 1960, he began serving in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Following his service to his country he returned to Atlantic and began working for Ben Chinitz at an auto salvage business and later, Stangl Motors as a mechanic. In 1965, he began his lifelong career with Heithoff Furniture, now Interior Touch. Roger could do it all in his line of work; he installed flooring, countertops, and blinds; in addition to deliveries and repairing furniture. His favorite part of the job was installing carpet and all the people he had the opportunity to meet and visit with through the years. In all his travels on the job he always seemed to find the best restaurants as well. Roger was a dedicated employee; and even though he stopped installing carpet 14 years ago he was still helping with other jobs when he could up until a few weeks ago.

Roger enjoyed fishing, especially for catfish, and was a regular at Conklin’s Fish Farm and other various ponds in the Bridgewater and Fontanelle areas. He also enjoyed hunting, mowing the lawn, tending to his garden, and cooking. Roger would tell you he was a jack of all trades and a master of all, and was the Mayor of Grove City. He sewed anything you could imagine from comforters, altering clothes, and kitchen curtains. His mind teasers and vehicles he made out of wood were incredible. He would often say he could do anything, with nothing in no time flat. Joyce will treasure the many parades and trips to town for breakfast in the Jewett.

Roger will be deeply missed by his wife of 15 years, Joyce; his children, Chris (Brad) Mead, Cindy (Web) Graves, Preston Nelson, Rick (Tammie) Nelson, Laurie (Kevin) Jobe, Rob (Karla) Cook, Kelly (Sally) Young and Kim Register; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, Don (Pat) Nelson; sister, Jeannie (Duane) Nippert; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Rose Nelson; grandson, Taylor Nelson; sisters, Dorothy Chamberlain, Pat Marsh, and Darlene Frizzell; brothers-in-law, Gary Sparks and Gary Anderson; and his mother and father-in-law.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 13, 2017, at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the service on Friday starting at 9:30 a.m. Burial, with military honors by the Atlantic Color Guard, will be held in the Atlantic Cemetery.
