Richard G.  Smith
Richard Glen Smith, 86, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, September 26, 2017, at Allen Place where he was a resident.

Richard, the son of Herbert Glen and Mildred (Joyce) Smith, was born November 9, 1930, on the family farm north of Atlantic, where he grew up. He graduated from Atlantic High School in 1948. In 1952, he entered the United States Marine Corps and is a veteran of the Korean War. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal from the Corps in 1954 with a war sustained disability. In 1955, he was united in marriage to Jeannette Templeman. They were married 58 years, until Jeannette’s passing in 2014. Except for his time in the Corps, Richard farmed his entire life in the Buck Creek neighborhood. After a major farm accident in 1966, he also worked off-farm, including many years at the Wonder Bread Store in Atlantic. Richard enjoyed family gatherings, especially Sunday evenings with popcorn and malts, playing checkers with Uncle Dave, tinkering in the machine shed, and raising a good crop of corn.

Survivors include Glen Smith and his wife, Fauzan of Atlantic, Diane Nosbisch of Clive, Iowa, Linda Robinson and her husband, Al of Atlantic, Iowa, Nancy Reece and her husband, Bill of Mandeville, Louisiana; 13 grandchildren, Rachel Wayson and her husband, Michael, Jacob Smith, Peter Smith and his wife, Ellie, Anna Smith, Laura Nosbisch, John Nosbisch, Matthew Nosbisch and his wife, Melissa, Dean Robinson, Jenny Arends and her husband, Tim, Emily Jaksich and her husband, Graham, Maggie Robinson, William Reece and his fiancé, Lesley, and Charles Reece; nine great grandchildren; sister, Eleanor Dunbar of Kaneohe, Hawaii; and brother, David Smith of Atlantic; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Jeannette; his parents; and half-brother, Paul Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 2, 2017, at Roland Funeral Home, with Pastor Jerry Neal of Buck Creek Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Brighton Township Cemetery, northeast of Marne, followed by a luncheon at The Venue, 307 Walnut Street, Atlantic.

Visitation with the family will be from five to seven p.m., Sunday, October 1, 2017, at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic.
