Obituary for Rosemary Leonard

Rosemary Leonard
Rosemary Leonard, 78, of Atlantic, Iowa passed away Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at her home surrounded by her family.

Rosemary Margaret was born August 7, 1939 in Maloy, Iowa, the daughter of John Donald and Mary Callista (Shay) Warin. She was baptized by Father Culhane at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Maloy and would later receive the sacrament of marriage at the same church, from the same priest. She graduated from Mt. Ayr High School in 1957. Rosemary then attended Ottumwa Heights College in Ottumwa and Marycrest College in Davenport, earning her bachelor’s degree in home economics.

On August 8, 1964 she was united in marriage to Keith Leonard. While Keith was in veterinary school at Iowa State, Rosemary worked as a senior buyer for Joseph’s Jewelry in Des Moines for four years. The couple made Atlantic home in 1970 and was blessed with three children.

She was always her kids #1 supporter and took part in their many activities. Rosemary was active in the Boy Scouts of America and was proud of Doug and David’s dedication to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. She was a volunteer with the Atlantic Swim Team for fifteen years. Boating was the hobby Rosemary and Keith chose for their family and numerous weekends were enjoyed and countless memories were made on the waters of Lake Panorama and the Lake of the Ozarks. She was a voracious reader on many subjects, sometimes finishing four to five novels in a week. Rosemary was the general contractor of the Leonard house, not only on home improvement projects but also in making big decisions, keeping things organized and raising the children. She was always there and up to having lots of fun! Being Nana to her seven grandkids was her delight. She attended countless sporting events and especially liked basketball games. Rosemary enjoyed having the grandkids over almost every day after school - having fun and helping them learn a few lessons of life along the way.

Rosemary was a long-time member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church. She was deeply involved in the Atlantic Right to Life organization and also provided material and financial support to unwed mothers.

Rosemary is survived by her husband, Dr. Keith Leonard; sons, Doug (Jill) Leonard and their children, Cooper and Reagan and David Leonard and his children, Catherine, Scott, Thomas and Mary, all of Atlantic; daughter, Kate (Tim) Getty and their son, Brennan of Cedar Rapids; sister, Joan Roets of West Des Moines; brother-in-law, Ken Reasoner of Iowa City; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Rita Anne Reasoner and infant brother, John Warin.

A Rosary will be said at 2:00 PM Sunday, October 1, 2017 at Roland Funeral Home followed by visitation with the family until 4:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, October 2, 2017, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the family for later designation to Atlantic Right to Life and Trinity Heights in Sioux City.
