Obituary for Agnes I. Waggoner (Christensen)

Agnes I. Waggoner (Christensen)
Agnes Waggoner, 93, passed away Sunday, September 17, 2017 at Heritage House, in Atlantic, Iowa.

Agnes Irene was born August 24, 1924, north of Wiota, Iowa, the daughter of Chris B. and Lillian Andersen Christensen. She attended grade school at Grant #9, west of Anita and Anita High School for a year and a half. Her parents moved to a farm south of Brayton and she began attending Exira High School, graduating in 1942. After high school, she worked as a cashier/office clerk at Scott’s Dime Store in Atlantic for seven years.

On January 20, 1951, she married Darrel D. Waggoner in Atlantic. The couple moved to Des Moines where she was employed in an office at Younkers, and later at J.C. Penny’s in Perry, IA. In 1953, they moved to Atlantic where she worked at Sears in the credit department for five and a half years. They returned to Des Moines when Darrel bought a barber shop, and during this time she worked in the Credit Departments at Grant’s Department Store and Alden’s Catalog Store. They moved to Kimberling City, MO for seven years, and in 1977, they moved back to Iowa, living on an acreage near Brayton. They made Atlantic home in 1984.

Agnes was not only a meticulous bookkeeper in her career, but also in their personal affairs. Agnes and Darrel enjoyed trips to Las Vegas and various cruises. They were content being together and also enjoyed the company of their cat through the years. Agnes was a member of the United Church of Christ in Atlantic, where she was baptized.

Agnes is survived by her nieces, Carol (Al) Menke of Bettendorf, IA, Charlotte (Randy) Phippen of Exira, IA, Linda Elliott of Omaha, NE, and Debra Waggoner of San Francisco, CA; nephew, Craig (Connie) Lykke of Brayton, Iowa; and several great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Darrel in 2014; mother, Lillian Christensen in 1983; father, Chris B. Christensen in 1990; infant siblings, Richard and Beatrice; sister and brother-in-law, Berniece and Harold Lykke; brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Norma Waggoner; and her father- and mother-in-law, Paul and Velma Waggoner.
