Obituary for Ann C Nelsen (Peters)

Ann C Nelsen (Peters)
Ann Nelsen, 66, of Elk Horn, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, August 30, 2017, at her home.

Ann Carol Peters was born on June 23, 1951, in Gregory, South Dakota, the daughter of Eugene Paul and Virginia Joanna (Viereck) Peters. She graduated from Huron High School where both her parents were teachers. Ann attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD, and graduated with a teaching degree from Mayville, State College in Mayville, ND in 1973.

Ann had two children, son Josh born in Brookings, SD and daughter, Jordan born in Atlantic, IA. Both Josh and Jordan were very athletic and so Ann spent many nights and weekends at football and basketball games through the years.

Ann taught History, Science and English in the Walnut School System for 11 years before moving with her family to Elk Horn in 1988, where she continued her teaching career until she retired in 2011. She taught Title One Reading and Math and later Reading Recovery. After her retirement Ann did substitute teaching and private tutoring.

Ann’s hobbies were many and varied including quilting, walking and swimming. She was also an avid antiques collector and a beautiful decorator at home. Since her own children are no longer in sports, one of Ann’s favorite activities was spending time with her grandson, Brady.

Ann loved her family and all her friends; she was always ready to give more than she received, and in fact she preferred it that way. She was very involved in the Elk Horn community through her church, Women of the Word and the Altar Guild. She was also a member of a Quilting Club “The Loose Threads,” and was a coordinator of the American Red Cross Blood Mobile. Ann was a long-time season ticket holder, along with several of her friends, for traveling Broadway Shows which played in Des Moines.

Ann knew how to love and was loved in return by all who were fortunate enough to know her. She will be forever in our hearts.

Ann is survived by her son, Josh Nelsen and his wife, Janese of Daphne, AL; grandsons, Josh and Justin Osborn and Brady Nelsen; sisters, Kathleen Kobriger and her husband, Dave and Susan Peterson and her husband, Dave; brothers, Mark Peters and his wife, Sandy and Todd Peters and his wife, Sonja; her very special friend, Duane Christofferson; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Jordan in 2002, and her parents.

Visitation with the family will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, September 1, 2017, at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 2, 2017, at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church, with Reverend Keith Menter officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Elk Horn Lutheran Church Women of the Word.

Roland Funeral Service is caring for Ann’s family and her arrangements. Condolences may be left at www.rolandfuneralservice.com
