Obituary for Betty Jane Brown

Betty J. Brown, 79, of Cumberland, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at her home.

Betty Jane was born on September 13, 1937, near Corning, Iowa, the only child born to Donald Rex and Mabel (Mateer) Reed. She attended school in Corning, and at the age of 18 was united in marriage to Delbert Hugh Brown at the Massena Methodist Church on December 23, 1955. Following their marriage the couple lived in Atlantic, and later moved to a farm northeast of Cumberland. When the family outgrew their small farm house they moved into the town of Cumberland.

All of Betty's life she had a love of horses, and took in every opportunity to ride. She received a 25 year plaque for her participation at River City Roundup. Betty's love of animals extended to caring for many cats and dogs through the years. Betty had her daily routine of walking her dog Tiny, and those on her route will deeply miss seeing her.

Betty was a member of the Cumberland United Methodist Church. Over the years she worked at the Redwood Steakhouse, Anita Care Center, DeLongs, and at Lyman Egg. Books made Betty happy, and this was probably the reason she enjoyed working at the Cumberland Library. She read books of all types and when she wasn't reading she could often be found watching old movies and westerns. Throughout her life she sewed anything one could imagine from kids clothing to leather repair on horse bridles. You name it and Betty probably could sew it!

Betty is survived by her children, Delbert (Andrea) Brown of Creston, Donald Brown of Creston, Naomi (Kreig) Namanny of Atlantic, Paul (Brenda) Brown of Atlantic, and Paula (Todd) Fried of Arthur; 10 grandchildren, James, Crystal, Aaron, Shelly, Ryan, Tia, Leela, Machelle, Kayla and Jeremy; 31 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her father, Donald Reed; mother, Mabel Hutchinson; husband, Delbert Brown; sons, Mark Brown and in infancy, Roger Brown; and daughter, Mary Helen Brown.

A Celebration of Betty's Life will be held by her family at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 15, 2017, at the Cumberland Community Building in Cumberland. Burial will be held at a later date in Newlons Grove Cemetery, southwest of Cumberland.
