Obituary for Irene Marie Ullerich
Irene M. Ullerich, 96, of Atlantic, passed away Saturday, June 3, 2017, at Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic.
Irene Marie Ullerich was born on May 25, 1921, in Ute, Crawford County, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Sophia Emma Ida (Knop) Ullerich. Her family made Atlantic their home when she was eight. She graduated from Atlantic High School in 1939, and went on to teach country school in the area for the next two years. Irene received parochial school training at Concordia Teacher's College in Seward, Nebraska, and taught in church schools for two years in Beemer, Nebraska and New Germany, Minnesota. She later worked as a secretary for Meadow Gold, now known as Dean Foods in Des Moines until she was 62. In 1982, she returned to Atlantic to care for her mother, and decided it was time to apply for her first driver's license at the age of 62.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic, and active in the Women's and Sewing Circles. Irene volunteered at the former Atlantic Care Center for many years. Irene enjoyed visiting with others at the many events held at the Senior Center. She always delighted in a game of pinochle and tending to her flower gardens.
Irene is survived by her sisters, Janice Moon and Helen Coles of Des Moines, Iowa, and her nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Sophia Ullerich; brother, Arnold Ullerich; and sister, Luella McBain.
Celebration of Life services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 1, 2017, at Southlawn Memorial Gardens in Atlantic, with Reverend Ken Davidson of Zion Lutheran Church officiating. Immediately following the service the family invites you to join them for refreshments in the fellowship hall at Zion Lutheran Church.
Memorials may be made to Mission Central or Zion Lutheran Church.
