Obituary for Marvin Behrends

Marvin Ernest Behrends, 79, passed away Saturday, March 18, 2017, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Marvin was born August 9, 1937, in Cass County, the son of Ernest and Lillie (Grote) Behrends. Marvin was baptized and confirmed at Wiota Lutheran Church in Wiota, Iowa. He attended school in Wiota, and while in high school drove a school bus. Marvin graduated with the Wiota High School Class of 1955. He served in the United States Navy from January 1956 until June 1960. He married Charlotte Ann Myers on August 13, 1960, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic.

He worked at Sears, Seidels, and Safeway before spending the rest of his career as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service in Atlantic, Iowa. Upon retiring he worked at Howard’s Clothing, Roland Funeral Home and had other part-time jobs with various Atlantic businesses.

Away from work, he volunteered for the Atlantic Little League, Atlantic Cemetery, and several committees at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic. He was a member the Elks Club and National Association of Letter Carriers. Marvin loved to travel and enjoyed meeting people and making new friends. An avid Atlanta Braves fan, he shared his passion for sports by also cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes with his family, friends and neighbors.

Marvin is survived by his sons, Todd (Vickie) Behrends of Clive, IA, Alan (Janet) Behrends of Omaha, NE, and John (Tammy) Behrends of Windsor Heights, IA; daughter, Beth (Derek) Davenport of Adair, IA; grandchildren, Nicholas and Nathan Behrends, McKenna and Drake Davenport, Emily (fiancé, Jordan Werkmeister) Clayton, Nicole (Andrew) Deignan; eight great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Dale (Sheryl) Myers and Jack Bell of Atlantic, IA; and special friend, Janice Peterson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Ann (Myers) Behrends and parents, Ernie and Lillie.

A visitation with the family will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Saturday, March 25, 2017, at Roland Funeral Home. A family interment, with military honors by the Atlantic Color Guard, will be held in the Atlantic Cemetery at 2:00 p.m., Saturday.

A Celebration of Marvin's Life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, March 26, 2017, at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, with Pastor Grant Van Lishout officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials are made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or to the Heritage House Good Samaritan Fund.
