Obituary for Esther E. Abbott
Esther E. Abbott, 85, of Atlantic, and formerly of Stanton, passed away, Wednesday, January 18, 2017, at the Stanton Care Center.
Esther Elizabeth was born on April 24, 1931, in Red Oak, Iowa, the daughter of William Arch and Edith Malinda (Anderson) Smith. Her family lived in Stanton and she was a graduate of Stanton High School in 1949. On February 4, 1951, she married Calvin Abbott in Stanton, Iowa. Esther worked at Job Service of Iowa and as a homemaker.
She was a charter member of the Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Stanton. Esther was also member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles #3763 since April of 1979, where she served as past president and 10 year secretary. She looked forward to spending time with friends at the Eagles and weekly BINGO.
Esther enjoyed tending to her vegetable garden. She was a faithful listener of KJAN and reader of the Atlantic, Stanton, Des Moines Register and Omaha World Herald. Esther loved caring for her many dogs she had over the years.
Esther is survived by a cousin, Glen Benskin of Stanton; aunt, Lillian Mercer of Stanton; many more cousins; and longtime friends, Rick and Maggie Morehouse of Cumberland.
She is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Dorman; a sister in infancy, Irene; and cousins, Maxine and Marveline Isaacson.
Open visitation at Roland Funeral Home will be held from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 24th. On Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. friends will gather to share memories of Esther.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 23rd at the Mamre Cemetery in Stanton, with Reverend Eric Kutzli of the Mamrelund Lutheran Church officiating. We will begin procession from the funeral home to Esther's hometown of Stanton and the cemetery at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday.
