Obituary for DeEtte Black-McCaw

DeEtte Jan Black-McCaw, 46, of Exira, passed away Wednesday, November 23, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

The daughter of Roland Alden and Janice Lucille (Johnson) Black, she was born November 2, 1970, at the Denver General Hospital in Denver, CO. She was baptized and confirmed at the Federated United Church of Christ in Exira by Reverend Nancy Jensen. She attended Exira Community School graduating with the High School Class of 1989. During her years in school, DeEtte was very active in all sports. She was chosen to participate in the Junior Olympics for track and field and traveled the world playing basketball for the American Basketball Team. She then attended Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge before transferring to Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny where she received her Associates Degree in Hospitality and Tourism.

After school, she returned to Exira where she was employed as the Activity Director at the Exira Care Center for many years until she made her home in Missouri where she continued her career as an Activity Director. DeEtte returned to Iowa where she made her home in North Liberty and was employed at Lantern Park Nursing and Rehab Center until she returned to Exira in 2015.

DeEtte was a devoted Denver Bronco fan and traveled to many games to watch the Broncos play. She loved collecting antiques, candles, and enjoyed cooking. In her younger years, she loved to play sand volleyball and fast pitch softball where her team traveled all over the State of Iowa to play in tournaments. But most of all she loved to spend time with her family and friends.

DeEtte will be deeply missed by her children, Braxton of Iowa City, IA, Aspen of Kansas City, MO, and Dayton of Tiffin, IA; her mother, Jan Black of Exira, IA; her brothers and sisters, Kim Black of Exira, IA, Brett Black of Norfolk, NE, Colette Muhr of Exira, IA, Scott (Diane) Black of Hamlin, IA, Lanette Black of Audubon, IA; her K-9 companion, Pheobe; several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives; and many friends.

She is preceded in death by her father, Roland Black; maternal grandparents, Hazel and Jay Johnson; paternal grandparents, Everett and Clarice Black; nephew, Andrew Petersen; and cousin, Jason Pross.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 27, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at the Exira Lutheran Church in Exira. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the service from 1:00 P.M. until time of the service at the Exira Lutheran Church. The family encourages you to wear Denver Bronco colors or your favorite NFL team attire in honor of DeEtte.

Per DeEtte's wishes cremation will take place following the funeral service.
