Obituary for Max Lee Pangburn Jr.

Max Lee Pangburn Jr., the son of Max Aaron and Juanita Onia (Wolfe) Pangburn was born on September 21, 1936, at his grandparent's hotel in Cumberland, Iowa, and died March 9, 2016, at Atlantic Specialty Care at the age of 79.

Max attended Mansfield Community School in Mansfield, Missouri, and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. When he returned from the service in 1963, he moved to Atlantic.

On December 9, 1964, he was united in marriage to Marlene Kay Popp at the Peace Evangelical Church in Walnut, Iowa. Two children, Marita and Marlo, were born to this union. Max worked for McMurphy Sod Company in Atlantic for a short time before he began employment at Hawkeye Sanitation, also in Atlantic. Over the years he worked several other jobs, including being an over the road truck driver until retiring. Then he mowed lawns in his spare time.

He was a member of the Hawks Flying Club. Max enjoyed building and flying remote control airplanes and building trains. He loved to go camping, hunting and fishing with his family. In his spare time he also liked to play his guitar and watch TV, which often included a western. Max didn't mind mowing and could often be found helping out a neighbor.

Max is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marlene; daughters, Marita (Tom) Russmann of Avoca, and Marlo (Rob) Stamp of Atlantic; granddaughters, Heather (Neal) Schurr of Webster City, Hanna Russmann of Spencer, Harley Russmann of Ames, Grace Russmann of Avoca, Michaela Crawley and special friend Trent Bramman of Atlantic; grandson, Preston (fiancé, Mary Rothermund) Stamp of Atlantic; great-grandson, Ayden Crawley; half-sisters, Mickey McAlister and Maureen Branstetter both of Springfield, Missouri, and Marguerite (Don) Pennington of Springdale, Arkansas; half-brother, Jack (Rose) Pangburn of Atlantic; brothers and sisters-in-law, Joanne (Verne) Schnackel of Clancy, Montana, Eldon "Butch" Popp of Walnut, and Dallas (Barbara) Popp of Avoca; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Juanita and Harold Bacon; father and step-mother, Max Sr. and Zelma Pangburn; seven year old brother, Cecil Leroy Pangburn; half-brother, Merril Pangburn; sisters-in-law, Esther Pangburn, Pat Pangburn and Jane Berge; brothers-in-law, Don Branstetter and Mike McAlister, Sr.; nephew, Mike McAlister, Jr.; niece, Kandy Betances; and several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

Celebration of Life services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 15, 2016, at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. Visitation with the family will be held on Tuesday from noon until time of service. Open visitation for signing of the guest book will be held Sunday from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. and Monday from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. at the Roland Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Reno Methodist Cemetery, southwest of Cumberland, Iowa.
