Obituary for Beulah Eblen

Beulah Eblen
Beulah Ann Eblen was born to Clara Thielen Neiens and Jake Neiens on a farm in Exira, Iowa, August 22, 1924. The third oldest of seven children, she attended the American Institute of Business in Des Moines after graduating from the Exira High School. After marrying Tom Eblen in 1947, she lived in Atlantic, Iowa, and often spent her winters in Scottsdale, Arizona. Beulah passed away November 13, 2015, at the Heritage House in Atlantic.

Beulah’s interests were legion, including her membership in the Atlantic Golf and Country Club, where she and Tom golfed regularly with a group of friends—the Commandos. She also relished playing bridge and being an early member of the Atlantic Junior Federated Club. She was committed to giving back to the community, serving on the Cass County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and being an instructor with the Reach for Recovery Program. Additionally, she participated in the Kiwanis Club’s work with needy children and the club’s outreach committee work with people with disabilities. She also truly enjoyed contributing to the annual Za-Ga-Zig chicken and noodles dinner.

The Catholic Church played an important role in her life. Following her mother’s love of quilting, she, too, quilted weekly with the church’s Sewing Circle. Significant, too, were her contributions to many funeral luncheons and to the organization, production, and participation in the church’s annual bazaar.

She loved beautiful hand-made things, and she was prolific in her creations in crewel, needlepoint, sewing, and quilting. She loved the natural world her entire life, as demonstrated in her gardening activities, including cultivating asparagus, strawberries, raspberries, flowers, vegetables, and a large fruit orchard. And her Christmas homemade peanut brittle was legendary, as were her jams, jellies, preserves, and canned garden vegetables. But her finest creations were baked goods—pastries, breads, and noodles. Baking Ida Needle’s Danish Pastries never daunted her.

She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Beulah Marie; three sisters, Louise Lee, Berniece Farrell, and Lee Roecker; and brother, Vernon Neiens. She is survived by her two daughters; Trudy Eblen (spouse Steven Livengood) and Kathy Sayers; one granddaughter, Andrea Rosenthal (spouse Kyle Rosenthal); great-granddaughter, Bianca Rosenthal; sister, Alyce Larson; brother, Bob Neiens; and cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Beulah Eblen’s life embodied a sincere love of friends and family, and an appreciation of beautiful, well-made things. All who knew her responded to her altruism and spirituality. She will be deeply missed.

A Rosary will be held at 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 17, 2015, followed by visitation with the family until 7:00 p.m., at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Wednesday, November 18, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic. Beulah’s interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Cumberland, following the after Mass luncheon in the Parish Center.
