Obituary for Theresa Nissen

Theresa Nissen
Theresa M. Nissen, 91, of Atlantic, passed away Tuesday, June 23, 2015, at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

Theresa Marie was born on September 12, 1923, the daughter of Ole P. and Emma (O'Brien) Olsen. She grew up and attended school in Elk Horn, Iowa.

On September 9, 1940, she married Belmond Nissen at her brother, Raymond's home in Elk Horn. They lived on a farm northwest of Kimballton until 1980, when they retired from farming and moved to town. After Belmond passed away in 1988, she made Atlantic her home. Theresa was not only a hardworking farm wife, but also worked for Allen Produce and was a nurse's aide at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan and Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn.

She was a current member of the Evangelical Free Church in Atlantic, and a former long time member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton, where she was active in Ladies Aid. Theresa had also been active in the Social Hour Club, while living on the farm. Theresa enjoyed time at home, and was always busy, whether it was cooking, baking, crocheting, embroidering, or sewing clothes for the grandkids. The family looked forward to tasty cinnamon rolls, pies, holiday cookies and receiving a tin filled with delicious chocolate chip cookies, one of her specialties.

Theresa is survived by her children, Linda Herman of Atlantic, IA, Doris (Danny) Olson of Van Wert, IA, Joanne Filsinger of Las Vegas, NV, Allan (Julie) Nissen of Exira, IA, and Terri (friend, Dave Wilson) Martin of Council Bluffs, IA; grandchildren, Mary (Clark) Johnson, Gary (Jodi) Vargas, Mike (Michelle) Olson, Jeff (Tina) Olson, Deborah (friend, Lee Chandler) Carson, Patricia (friend, Steve Sandage) Parkhurst, Shelley Callaway, Scott (Susie) Nelson, Brian (Pranee) Nelson, Jill (Glen) Cornell, Jennifer (Terry) Weisenborn, Jaime (Cole) Christensen, Crystal (Mitch) Cushman, Tyler Kermoade, Benton Nissen, Bethany Nissen, Robert Krisinger; 28 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; daughter -in-law, Sally (Kelly) Young of Marne, IA; brother-in-law, Harold (Elna) Nissen of Harlan, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Ole P. and Emma Olsen; husband, Belmond in 1988; son, Keith in 1993; grandson, Ronald Vargas in 1981; brother, Raymond (Edna) Olsen; sisters, Ellen (Henrik) Petersen and Edith (Chris) Hastert; and sons-in-law, Harold Herman, Nicholas Filsinger and Rocky Martin.
