Obituary for Verlain M Rathkamp

Verlain Mueller Rathkamp, 94, a lifelong resident of Griswold, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2015, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital.

The son of William Frederick and Leora Rose (Mueller) Rathkamp, he was born April 5, 1920, at the family home South of Cumberland. Verlain was united in marriage to, Mary Anne Grace Lindeman, on November 19, 1945, in Atlantic. They attended the Atlantic Gospel Chapel.

Verlain was a sportsman in every sense of the word, playing with natural talent and honed skill; he was an avid fan of watching all kinds of sports, as well. He was a lifelong Cubs fan and later became attached to the Boston Celtics. Bowling may have been his favorite and he astonished onlookers one evening, with a perfect game.

He farmed near Griswold his entire life and loved to work the ground, staying active even after "retirement." He also loved to fish and camp, traveling many summers with his sister and brother-in-law to Minnesota and Canada. He and Grace visited all 50 states. Verlain dearly loved his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them. His greatest love was for the Lord Jesus Christ. Verlain's faith came out in his family, work and friendships; "His servant heart made him available to help anyone, anywhere, anytime."

Verlain is survived by his wife of 69 years, Grace; daughter, Patty (Mark) Guldenpfennig of Kansas City, MO; grandchildren, Jenae, Amber, Chris, Aaron & Adam of Kansas City, MO; brothers-in-law, Bud Lindeman and C.G. (Helen) Lindeman; sister-in-law, Martha Jane Lehmkuhl; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Leora Rathkamp; mother- and father-in-law, Alma and Calvin Lindeman; granddaughter, Patricia Ann; brothers-in-law, Travis Martens, Murry Schuler, Harold Wagner, Grover Lehmkuhl, and B.J. Riley; sisters-in-law, Pauline Schuler, Lois Wagner, Doris Jane Lindeman, Carol Lindeman, and Betty Riley; and nieces and nephews, Paul Ryan, Alan Wagner, Alice Lindeman, Donald Lindeman, and Jo Riley.
