Obituary for Dorothy A Young

Dorothy A. Young, 84, of Anita and formerly of Walnut, Marne and Atlantic, passed away Friday, January 2, 2015, at Caring Acres Nursing and Rehab Center.

The daughter of Walter and Elsie Walters Christensen, Dorothy Arlene Christensen was born February 19, 1930, north of Atlantic, Iowa. She attended country school. At age 20, Dorothy was married to Robert Eugene Young on May 21, 1950. The couple moved south of Walnut in 1958, where they raised their son and daughter. She was always active on their farm and did all the milking herself. She also enjoyed being a part of her neighborhood card club and the Women's Fellowship at Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut, Iowa. After retirement from the farm, they moved to Forsyth, Missouri in 1987. She was employed by the Fall Creek Resort in Branson and was in charge of all their gardens for several years. They returned to Walnut in 2001. In 2007, they moved into the Peace Haven Home in Walnut and then moved to Salem Lutheran at Elk Horn, Iowa, in March 2008. Her husband, Robert, passed away about a year later. In January of 2014, she moved to Caring Acres in Anita, Iowa, to be near her daughter. Her passion was gardening and flowers and as a couple, she and Robert loved to polka dance.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Verna Matthies and her husband, Robert of Anita; son, Kenneth Young and his wife, Jean of Atlantic; six grandchildren, Corey Matthies, Julie Wheatley, Jill Cary, John Matthies, Krista Young and Chance Young; eleven great-grandchildren, Kale Matthies, Avery Wheatley, Nolan Wheatley, McKenna Matthies, Tyler Matthies, Carson Cary, Madden Cary, Tucker Paulsen, Brody Paulsen, Macade Paulsen and Charlie Young; one great-great-grandson, Lincoln Matthies; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Raymond Christensen and Norman Christensen.
