Obituary for Leonard "Penny" Tuel

Leonard "Penny"  Tuel
Leonard H. "Penny" Tuel, 95, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, August 5, 2014, at Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center.

Leonard House Tuel, was born on December 16, 1918, in Coon Rapids, Iowa, the son of Leonard and Musetta (House) Tuel. He graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1939. Following graduation he worked on the family farm, until being drafted into the United States Army on October 17, 1941. After completing basic training, he was transferred to Oahu, Hawaii, where he has a member of the 104th Field Artillery of the 27th Division. Penny served his country during WWII taking part in invasions at Eniwetok in the Marshall Islands, Saipan in the Mariana Islands, and Okinawa. He was honorably discharged on October 17, 1945.

Ruby Brawe met the man of her dreams, Penny Tuel, while she was teacher at Massena No. 5. They married on November 10, 1945, in Malvern, Iowa. The couple was blessed with three children.

He was a farmer in the Massena area, until moving to Atlantic in 1962. Penny began working at Walnut Grove driving a feed truck and was later promoted to manager of the feed depot. He retired in 1985, after 23 years at Walnut Grove.

Penny enjoyed planting flowers, tinkering in his garage, and fixing things. He will be remembered for his radiant smile and neighborly ways. Penny’s family was important to him and he looked forward to time with his grandchildren.

Penny is survived by his daughter, Vicki Vollmuth of Omaha, NE; sons, Rodger (Nancy) Tuel of Berthoud, CO, and Tim (Denise) Tuel of Shelby, IA; grandchildren, Joel Tuel, and Troy (Vanessa) Tuel, all of Denver, CO, Amelia and Alyssa Tuel of Des Moines, IA, Taylor Tuel of Ames, IA, Chris (Julie) Vollmuth, Jenny (Ben) McKenzie, Missy (Nate) Croom, and Matt (Katie) Vollmuth, all of Omaha, NE; great-grandchildren, Grace, Lucy and Sam Vollmuth, Maddie and Mollie Mckenzie, Ava and Eli Croom, and Leah and Megan Vollmuth all of Omaha, NE; sister-in-law, Millree Brawe of Massena, IA; and nieces, nephews, family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruby in 2009; sister, Elaine Underberg; brothers, Howard and Reginald Tuel; son-in-law, Lyle Vollmuth; and sister and brother-in-laws.

Committal, with military rites, will be held prior to the service at 8:30 a.m., Saturday at Massena Center Cemetery.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 9, 2014, at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic, with Reverend Lanette Plambeck officiating.

Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, August 8, 2014, at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic.
