Obituary for Dorothy Ackerman

DOROTHY ACKERMAN

Our wife, mother, mother-in-law, sister, sister-in-law, grandma and friend. Dorothy came to us as the second child of Clair and Harriett (Drake) Darrow on November 28, 1918, in Atlantic, Iowa.

She married Roland E. Ackerman on May 4, 1937, in Griswold, Iowa. Dorothy loved our country and waited anxiously for her husband to return from duty during World War II.

Here's to the woman whose warmth, wisdom and humor have earned her the respect of her friends and family, and who made this world a better place to live.

Here's to the woman who knew how it felt to lose as well as to win. The woman who could see a cherished dream wash away, and start back to work on a new one with faith in herself and hope for tomorrow.

Here's to the woman who didn't claim to know the answers until she understood the questions.

Those left to carry on Dorothy’s love are her daughter, Charlotte (Bill) Hatcher; grandson, Jay (Tara) Hammond; great grandchildren, Mya and Ana Hammond; sister, Jeanne Huish; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clair and Harriett Darrow; husband, Rollie; son, Robert; sister, Mildred; brother and sister-in-law, Larry (Lola Darrow) Berg; father and mother-in-law, Casper and Eva Ackerman; son-in-law, Craig Hammond; brother-in-law, Charles Huish; and several uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends.

Here's to the woman who knew where she stood. The woman with confidence in her own beliefs, that she wasn't afraid to let others express theirs. Mom, you were loved and will be missed by many.

Dorothy left us to plant her flower garden in Heaven on June 9, 2014, in Sandpoint, Idaho.

Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 20, 2014, at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. Committal services will take place in the Atlantic Cemetery, followed by a luncheon at Roland Funeral Home.

Roland Funeral Service is caring for Dorothy's family and the arrangements. Condolences may be left at www.rolandfuneralservice.com.
