Obituary for Dennis Oathoudt

Dennis Dwayne Oathoudt, 68, of Atlantic, passed away unexpectedly in a truck accident on Tuesday, May 27, 2014, in Dallas County, Iowa.

The son of Robert and Ethel Brehmer Oathoudt, he was born April 7, 1946, in Atlantic, Iowa. He grew up west of town and graduated from the Atlantic High School in 1964.

Dennis married Karen Edna Stender, September 26, 1965, at the Central Church of Christ in Griswold, Iowa. He served in the Iowa National Guard for 7 years. They farmed west of Atlantic for 12 years, and then moved to Anita where he was a feed salesman for Challenge Feed and Adair Feed & Grain for 8 years. They moved to Lenox for three and a half years, where he managed the Lenox Elevator. In 1989, they returned to Atlantic and soon started Oathoudt Farm Supply, which they opened at "The Shop" at his parent's home. After 12 years there, they purchased the former Walnut Grove facility and expanded.

Dennis was an active elder at Sunnyside Bible Chapel. He trusted the Lord in 1974 and daily put all his faith and trust in Jesus. It was in his heart to always share the peace he had found. He was a member of the Gideons, a 4-H leader and a volunteer on the Cass County Fair Grounds Committee. He, loved people, especially his children and grandchildren, loved his work and always had a radiant grin for all that he encountered! Other pursuits that Dennis enjoyed with family and friends were hunting, fishing, golfing, and working with cattle.

Dennis is survived by his wife of 48 years, Karen of Atlantic; their children, Terrence (Cindy Karns) Oathoudt of Anita, Krista (Bradley) McDonald of Colorado Springs, CO, John Oathoudt of Lyman, IA and Jason Oathoudt of Nodaway, IA; grandchildren, Jake (Sheri) Karns, Joey (Tiffany Burks) Flathers, Matthew, Melissa and Brandon McDonald, Levi, Brian, Caroline and Helen Oathoudt, Jade and Jace Petersen and Jake and Joey Oathoudt; great grandchildren, Alexis Karns, Ty and Deegan Flathers; his mother, Ethel Oathoudt; three sisters, Jeanie McMullen, Carol Sue (Bob) Hogueison and Debbie Metheny; brothers-in-law, Arlo (Mary) Stender and Kent (Julie) Stender; a sister-in-law, Shirley Stender; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his dad, Bob Oathoudt; a brother in infancy, LeRoy Eugene; his nephew, Patric Nettz; his parents-in-law, John and Dorothy Stender; and brothers-in-law, Ernest Stender and Bill McMullen.

A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, June 2, 11 a.m. at the Roland Funeral Home. A private family committal service will take place at the Atlantic Cemetery.
