Obituary for Carl E. Johnson

Carl E. Johnson of Lewis, Iowa, and formerly of Atlantic, passed away Saturday, April 19, 2014, at the Griswold Care Center, at the age of 92 years.

Carl Edward Johnson was born on July 1, 1921, in Arthur, Iowa, the son of Carl Oscar and Amber Irene (Betenbender) Johnson.

He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from February of 1942, until his honorable discharge in December of 1946.

Carl was a man of many talents and skills which he used in various jobs throughout his long life, working well into his eighties. He had been a farmer and operator of a service station, "back in the day when there was such a thing." Later, he worked construction and most recently managed two apartment complexes in Atlantic. Carl was never without a fishing pole "or six," just in case he came upon a river, pond, or lake that he might need to cast a line into. It would be no surprise if he has already found the best fishin’ spot in Heaven. His favorite place to eat was Long John Silvers, and you can bet he would be ordering a Pepsi, and it better be "the real stuff and not that dang Diet Pepsi." Carl looked forward to spring when he could plant his huge garden and true to his giving nature, generally gave most of his harvest away. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to his family and friends.

Carl will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him including his wife of 47 years, Helen of Lewis, Iowa; his daughters, Mary Patch and Bonnie Johnson of Indianola, Iowa; granddaughters, Malinda (Roger) Patch-Gray and Carol (Steve) Patch-Snyder and their children, Alicia and Tristin, all of Indianola, Iowa; honorary grandson, Clint (Katie) Holtz of Boone, Iowa; his sister, Merle Jean (Duane) Klinger of Farnhamville, Iowa; two step-children; and many extended family and special friends.

His is preceded in death by his son, Eddie Johnson in 2006; his parents, Carl and Amber Johnson; a sister; and a half brother.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, April 25, 2014, at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic, Iowa, with Pastor Nadine Aydt of the United Congregational Methodist Church in Lewis, officiating.

Military Rites will be presented by the Atlantic Color Guard.

Interment will be held at a later date at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, Iowa.

The family would like to thank the Griswold Care Center and Cass County Unity Point Hospice for the exceptional care Carl was given.

Memorials may be made to the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, 34024 Veterans Memorial Drive, Adel, Iowa 50003-3300.
