MARIAN CELIA MILLER TAYLOR

Marian Celia Taylor, a native of Avoca, Iowa, passed away Monday morning, February 27, 2012, at the Heritage House in Atlantic, Iowa, at the age of 96 years and 8 months.
Marian was born in June 27, 1915 to Fred Gerald Miller, Sr. and Mary Nelson Miller in Avoca, Iowa. She attended school in Avoca for one year then attended school in Atlantic, graduating from the Atlantic High School at the age of 16.
After graduation, Marian went to work for Northwest Bell Telephone Company as a switch board operator. In August of 1943, she took a leave-of-absence from the telephone company to join the military service as a member of the W.A.V.E.S. She reported to Hunter College in New York, NY for basic training, to Cedar Falls, IA for yeoman training, and to Washington, D.C. WAVE quarters “D” Barracks to report to duty at the Communications Annex. Marian served until 1945. She was honorably discharged as a Specialist “Q” 2nd Class at Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Chicago, IL, on November 17, 1945, returning to her job in Atlantic. After nearly 34 years of telephone service, Marian retired in 1967 and for ten years she was a fashion show director for Sarah Coventry. She was active in a number of Atlantic organizations, a life member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and Beta Sigma Phi Social and Cultural Sorority. Marian was an elder and circle secretary-treasurer of the First United Presbyterian Church in Atlantic. She was a current member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Surviving Marian is one brother, Fred Miller II and his wife, Joan, of Avoca, IA and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Jim Miller and Tom Lorah; and one sister, Alice Miller.
There will be open visitation for Marian on Tuesday, February 28 from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm and Wednesday, February 29, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic, Iowa. A family visitation will follow on Wednesday evening from 5:00 to 7:00. Services for Marian will be held on Thursday morning, March 1, at 10:00 am in the Roland Funeral Home with Reverend Holly Smith, of the First United Presbyterian Church in Atlantic, officiating. The interment will be in the Graceland Cemetery in Avoca. There will be a military service by the Avoca American Legion, Post 227, at the cemetery.
